8 Eco-Friendly Must-Haves Under $20

Earth Day is around the corner (April 22nd to be exact), and we could all use a reminder and some tips on how to treat the world better. We tend to think saving the earth is complicated and expensive, but this mentality prevents us from taking any action. Rather, by doing something simple, like re-evaluating what we buy, and being mindful of future purchases, our actions can create a huge positive impact!

Curious about what you can do without breaking the bank? We’ve got you covered. Here are 8 items under $20 to create an earth-friendly lifestyle.

Bamboo Toothbrushes ($9.99-$11)

We brush every day in hopes to get those pearly whites, but our traditional toothbrushes are impossible to break down. They remain in our landfills forever. Yuck. When it’s time to replace your toothbrush, consider getting one made of bamboo. It’s biodegradable! You can get them here in Canada or here in the U.S.

Recyclable Cutlery ($16.45)

The weather is warming up and that usually inspires picnics, bbq’s, or other parties. Throw away plastic cutlery helps you avoid the hassle of washing up, but it’s not recyclable. So how do you get the best of both worlds? When you’re stocking up for your party, get these compostable alternatives! No washing and you help the earth!

Cotton Produce Bags ($15.95)

You know those individual plastic bags used for produce - the ones we can never open on the first try? Yeah, they harm our environment too. While you can reuse them in some ways, when you’re getting different kinds of fruits and veggies, weekly, the plastic adds up. Next time you go out for groceries, use these cotton produce bags. They hold the same quantity as regular plastic produce bags, are stronger, and you can reuse them countless times!

Biodegradable Pens ($0.75 - 2.00)

Pens are classic tools that we use every day, but we tend to toss these small items out without a thought and fail to realize that for the most part, they are not biodegradable! The next time you’re out of pens, either buy some that are made out of wood OR from recycled materials like plastic or cardboard. You can get them here.

Reusable Food Wraps ($15-18)

Plastic food wrap is a common household item and a great way to keep leftovers fresh.  However, the thin plastic is used and thrown away in large quantities every day. Food wraps like Abeego, are reusable, washable, and once it's time to throw away they are biodegradable!

Eco-friendly Hair Dryer ($8.53)

Drying with hair dryers also consumes quite a bit of energy which means burning coal. Now don’t start thinking that we’re asking you to airdry and catch a cold. Imagine having the Tesla of hairdryers. No damage to hair, no damage to the environment, no more going crazy by the loud fan in your ear. Also, get your hair dry 40% faster than what you’re used to. Check out the Ultimate Hair Brush Dryer here.

Bamboo/Metal Straws ($16-18)

Phone? Check. Wallet? Check. Reusable straw? Check. While they’re easy to grab and go, once tossed - usually, after one use-  plastic straws take about 200 years to break down. Bamboo and metal straws are a great eco-friendly alternative as they are portable, easy to wash, and are a stylish accessory for your drink. Next time you leave your house, make sure to add these reusable options to your checklist!

Recycled Credit Card Holders ($11.99)

For all this shopping you may need to carry your wallet around. Be sure to get one that speaks to your new commitment to be a friend of mother earth. Made out of manufacturer-reject plastic, these wallets are not only eco-friendly but will have you stand out in a crowd. You can get a Mother Erth Credit Card Holder here!

Which one of these did you like the most? Which one do you think will make the biggest difference in lessening the waste you leave behind for your future self and those coming after you?

The idea here is not to go on a shopping spree but to pick one or two things on the list that you will use the most. There’s no better day than earth day to make a small choice which can make a big difference for our environment. As for me? I’ll treat myself to that energy saving hair-dryer.
